The Exhibition
FragmentActions: one word, one idea, the most appropriate to describe and summarize Sergio Belacchi's work. These mosaics draw inspiration from ancient mosaic surfaces and, like a free, white palette, are interpreted in the design and execution of the mosaic surface. This surface projects into a three-dimensional and material dimension, through the movement of the tiles, as if narrating the passage of time.
A memory both physical and emotional, capable of constantly changing through dialogue with light.
The Artist
Sergio Belacchi, originally from San Costanzo (PU) but adopted by the city of Ravenna, was born in 1955.
After earning his master's degree in art from the "A. Apolloni" State Art Institute in Fano, in the pictorial decoration section, in 1972, he moved to Ravenna to study mosaics (Prof. Renato Signorini) and painting restoration (Prof. Aurelio Morellato). In 1976, he earned a diploma in decoration from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ravenna.
That year, as a student at the Academy, he participated in the "Rassegna mosaico contemporaneo" (Contemporary Mosaic Exhibition), exhibiting a work at the Franciscan Cloisters.
He subsequently began working at Carlo and Renato Signorini's "Studio il mosaico," where he was assigned to restore mosaics in Puglia (Canosa, Egnazia, Taranto, and Otranto).
During this period, he met colleagues including G. Galli, V. Marzi, G. Babini, M. De Luca, E. Tinarelli, and P. Racagni, now well-known mosaic artists. He maintained a strong interest in mosaics and produced numerous works, but never exhibited them.
In the early 1980s, he co-founded "Laboratorio del Restauro Srl," where he spent forty years restoring paintings, frescoes, and stone, working in Ravenna and beyond, in basilicas, churches, and palaces on behalf of Superintendencies, public, and private institutions.
In recent years, he has resumed producing mosaics, and since 2015, he has been a regular participant in the "Opere dal Mondo" event, coordinated by the International Association of Contemporary Mosaicists, of which he is a member.
In 2022, he inaugurated his first solo exhibition, "Mosaics and Archeomosaics," at the Pagani Exhibition Center in Fano. Recently, in 2025, he held the solo exhibition "Litostrati" at the PR2 space as part of the 9th Contemporary Mosaic Biennial of Ravenna.
He lives and works in Ravenna.
