“Was it a funerary monument for the king? Of course, but not only that. The great stone blocks of the Mausoleum of Theodoric whisper tales and legends. They speak of a child who was afraid of lightning, was sent as a hostage to Byzantium, then returned, became a powerful ruler, and conquered Italy. A king has friends and enemies, can be generous and ruthless, loves and betrays. In this building, admired for centuries by engineers and architects, painters and poets, his secret is kept. A mystery halfway between the human and the divine, told in sixteen stories, ancient, future, and timeless.”
